Refined carbohydrates refer to those products that are made with processed grains. They don’t exactly have to be sweet but they do break down into sugar very quickly when they get into your body due to the refining process. The refining process gets rid of all the fibre from the original grain. When you eat a meal that’s rich in refined carbs, you get a very high glycemic load that will lead to a spike in your blood sugar. It pretty much causes the same problems that eating straight sugars would cause. These include dementia, memory impairment and inflammation. According to studies, in fact, children who eat a diet that contains high amounts of refined carbohydrates often get a lower score when it comes to nonverbal intelligence tests. For elderly people who eat the same, the risk of mental impairment and dementia is also higher than in those who eat grains, fruits and vegetables as well.
